Pace Selected in NYC's First Dockless Bike Share Pilot

New York, NY (July 5, 2018) — The New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) has selected Pace, Zagster’s nationwide lock-to dockless bike sharing service, to participate in the city’s 2018 Dockless Bike Share pilot program. Pace will begin operating in the Rockaways in Queens this July, with 200 bikes. Throughout the summer, residents in the Rockaways, visitors and tourists will be able to ride Pace and enjoy the Rockaways’ scenic beach.

Having the largest city in the U.S. select Pace is a testament to the lock-to dockless bike sharing model Zagster has pioneered and perfected across more than 250 bike sharing programs nationwide. Pace will provide the Rockaways with a new mobility option that offers a more convenient and healthy alternative to driving, and delivers a dockless bike share experience with all of the benefits and none of the drawbacks. Pace was one of 5 companies selected for New York City’s bike share pilot, which will introduce the new service to neighborhoods in the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, and Staten Island not yet reached by Citi Bike.

New York City is Pace’s third launch in one of America’s top-20 most populous cities in the last three months, following launches in Chicago and Austin where Pace was the first dockless company permitted to operate within city limits. Pace is now live in more than a dozen markets since launching in December 2017, and will continue to expand its footprint throughout the year with new Pace bike share programs and conversion of existing Zagster programs to Pace.

“We’re thrilled to bring Pace to New York City, and operating in the Rockaways couldn’t be a better fit,” said Zagster CEO Tim Ericson. “As one of the top summer destinations for NYC residents and tourists, Pace’s brand of lock-to dockless bike sharing will show how dockless bikes can operate alongside huge crowds heading out to enjoy the beach. The NYC DOT’s commitment to expanding transportation options across the five boroughs is a clear example of an innovative government in action. We’re excited to continue working with the city to make this pilot program the most successful it can be.”

Pace is a new, modern dockless bike share service for cities and colleges powered by Zagster’s proven smart bike platform. Founded in 2007, Zagster is the U.S. market leader in bike sharing with more than 250 programs across 35 states that put bikes within reach of more than 6.5 million people every day.

Unlike other dockless bike share services, Pace features smart bikes that lock to fixed objects — not just to themselves — to provide predictability and flexibility for riders while preserving order and safety for communities. Riders can rent bikes and park them at any public bike rack or other legal bike parking structure, enabling true point-to-point travel so riders can reliably add bike sharing to their daily commute.

To ride, users download the free Pace Bike Share app, available in the App Store and Google Play. One tap in the app automatically unlocks the bike, allowing a rider to get rolling in seconds.
