Mark Twain once remarked, “Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated.” The same is true of the bike sharing industry. Just a few months ago as bike share Alta Bicycle Share, the operator of many US-based programs was financially troubled. Programs scheduled to launch across the country were delayed. As with most new industries, the road is never straight, well paved and without obstacles. Yet bike sharing has persevered. Alta Bicycle Share was purchased by REQX The City of Montreal just announced it would extend the Bixi program in that city through 2019. Bike sharing programs keep springing up in places like Phoenix, Tampa, San Diego, Oklahoma City and our very own Princeton, Cleveland and Duke University locations.
The industry is at an inflection point, with new companies, new technologies and new models making it easier than ever to launch and sustain a bike sharing program in just about any community.
Mark Twain also said “A lie gets halfway around the world while the truth is still tying its shoe.” Also true in this case!
