Zagster Satisfies Santa Clarita's Bikeshare Craving

What do you do when traffic is a nightmare but the weather is gorgeous year-round? Bikeshare, of course.

The residents of Santa Clarita, CA, who have been hankering for a bikeshare program for almost two years, can now enjoy carefree—and car-free—commutes and recreational opportunities thanks to the city's new Pace bikeshare program, which is scheduled to launch today, December 14.

When the city surveyed residents in early 2017, 75 percent of respondents expressed their interest in a bikeshare program, according to a press release issued by the city. So with the help of its tourism partners, the city partnered with Zagster to launch its Pace Pilot Program, featuring 12 bikeshare stations and 50 bikes at local hotspots and popular trailheads. The Santa Clarita bikeshare is Zagster’s 256th operation in the United States.

With more than 115 miles of bike paths and trails around the city, Santa Clarita already boasted an enthusiastic cycling community, but the addition of a bikeshare program promises to facilitate access for new and non-local participants. Evan Thomason, who works for Santa Clarita’s communications department and was involved in introducing the program, said that in addition to community interest in bikeshare, the city’s hotels often received inquiries from visitors about using local bike trails. “We see the program as a benefit to both tourists and residents,” Thomason said. “It’s affordable, and I believe it will catch on well.”

Users can download the Pace App to locate the stations, which feature bike racks and on-board locks to ensure the safe return of the bikes, and rent bikes for $1 per half hour. The program also includes student discounts, and residents can snag a $2 credit for their first ride using the code RIDESC.

Although the bikes are available for use as of December 14, an official public launch celebration will ring in the program after the holidays, with further details to come.
